Cloud regimes as phase transitions

چکیده
Clouds are repeatedly identified as a leading source of uncertainty in future climate predictions. Of particular importance are stratocumulus clouds, which can appear as either (i) closed cells that reflect solar radiation back to space or (ii) open cells that allow solar radiation to reach the Earth’s surface. Here we show that these clouds regimes – open versus closed cells – fit the paradigm of a phase transition. In addition, this paradigm characterizes pockets of open cells (POCs) as the interface between the openand closed-cell regimes, and it identifies shallow cumulus clouds as a regime of higher variability. This behavior can be understood using an idealized model for the dynamics of atmospheric water as a stochastic diffusion process. With this new conceptual viewpoint, ideas from statistical mechanics could potentially be used for understanding uncertainties related to clouds in the climate system and climate predictions.

Accurate predictions of cloud and precipitation processes in the marine boundary layer are critical to U.S. Navy operations, as well as being more broadly important to improving seasonable predictability and the performance of NWP models. The major goal of the project is to develop and test state-of-theart boundary layer and microphysical parameterizations in order to better represent the conti...
متن کاملSelective Cloud Point Extraction and Preconcentration of Copper by the Use of Dithizone as a Complexing Agent
The aim of this work was to develop a selective cloud point extraction method for the separation and preconcentration of copper(II) prior to spectrophotometric determination. For this purpose dithizone was used as a complexing agent and the experimental solution was acidified with sulfuric acid. Triton X-114 was used as a surfactant and after phase separation, based on the cloud point of th...

Ammonium nitrate (AN) is widely used in fertilizers, civilian explosives and military explosives. Due to crystalline phase transitions and density changes of AN in the ambient conditions, its usage as oxidizer in solid propellants has some limitations as compared to ammonium perchlorate (AP). Several methods have been introduced to overcome these problems. In the present paper, the phase transi...
متن کاملWeather Regimes and Preferred Transition Paths in a Three-Level Quasigeostrophic Model
Multiple flow regimes are reexamined in a global, three-level, quasigeostrophic (QG3) model with realistic topography in spherical geometry. This QG3 model, using a T21 triangular truncation in the horizontal, has a fairly realistic climatology for Northern Hemisphere winter and exhibits multiple regimes that resemble those found in atmospheric observations. Four regimes are robust to changes i...
